Recognizing that the acquisition of English skills would be essential for non-English speakers, in order to acquire good jobs, earn GEDs or high school diplomas, and have the opportunity for higher education, local church members were determined to help. In March 2016, the Columbus Branch Adult Center was conceived by inner city missionaries, Jeffrey and Sonia Henkel. Local church leaders provided great support.
Key support came from Tyson Smith, the CEO of “Reading Horizons,” an educational software company which supports online learning of English and reading. In addition, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has provided their “EnglishConnect” program which has been used all over the world to teach English, and is now the foundational curriculum of our English classes.
